The Social Singles – Playground

25 May

In the spirit of these Social Singles and trying things new, we offer you May’s single “Playground”, which is an intimate, stripped down ballad penned and played by Cherie Rae on piano. We hope you find it a heartfelt and lovely way to kick off this summer season.

And as always, download….share…and enjoy!

The second big reason we are thrilled about this month’s offering is we brought on a very special guest artist to join us in the recording process. Eric Badger has lent us his incredible talent on the beautiful mandolin and we couldn’t be happier about it. So take a listen and as always…download, share and enjoy!

What are The Social Singles? Simply put, it is a collection of songs that we will be releasing online over the course of 2012.

In todays technologically advanced and socially connected world, the ability and ease of an artist to share their work with others is easier, quicker and less constrained by cost than it ever has been. Platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Bandcamp and Soundcloud (among others) have been transformed from mere information repositories to highly developed tools that artists now have to share their passion with the world.

So, as a challenge to ourselves, an offering to our wonderful supporters and in general a really fun project; Days of Rae will be writing, recording and releasing one single each month throughout 2012. We will be distributing each song completely free of charge on as many social platforms as we can think of. Thusly, throughout the year you will have these songs (dubbed “The Social Singles) available to you to download, share, repost, love, hate, praise, criticize or however else you wish to consume.

With this project, we aim to make each release unique. The production of each song will range from duo compositions recorded in songwriter Cherie Rae Cobbs’ home studio, to full band arrangements recorded and produced interstately. We also hope to feature guest musicians on select songs throughout the year.

As always, we thank you for listening as we look forward to a fun and productive year.

The Social Singles – Betajar

22 Apr

April’s single is a fun change of pace for us. First of all, we not only wrote the song with the full band across multiple states via email, dropbox and soundcloud. But we also challenged ourselves by completely flipping our writing process upside down. Every songwriter/band has a typical way and order to which they write. We took that order and spun it a complete 180. The result was…we feel…refreshing. A change from our norm but yet not a departure from out sound.

The second big reason we are thrilled about this month’s offering is we brought on a very special guest artist to join us in the recording process. Eric Badger has lent us his incredible talent on the beautiful mandolin and we couldn’t be happier about it. So take a listen and as always…download, share and enjoy!

Visit Illegal Pete’s throughout April for Autism Awareness Month!

2 Apr

http://illegalpetes.com/blog/community/illegal-petes-announces-smother-autism-campaign-in-support-of-autism-awareness-month-joshua-school/

You can help us help the Joshua School by smothering your burrito, through donations, and by attending a few events at our DU location.

During the entire month of April (Autism Awareness Month), Illegal Pete’s will be working to extinguish the challenges of Autism Spectrum Disorder by raising funds for The Joshua School through the Smother Autism Program. Illegal Pete’s will be donating $1 to The Joshua School every time a customer smothers their burrito and will also give customers an opportunity to donate $1 in exchange for a leaf that helps grow the abilities of all and can be signed and displayed in stores. Our mobile ordering app, Pete’s Mobile, will give customers the chance to “round up” your order as a straight donation.

The Illegal Pete’s DU location will be hosting two events to support the program. A Smother Autism Party takes place on Saturday, April 14th from 8pm to close. Customers can donate $15 in return for all you can drink Coors and Coors Light, or donate $25 for all you can drink Odell’s and Coors. Local bands, the music of Robert Harrison, and Days of Rae, will perform at the event. On Thursday, April 26th, local artist, The Epilogues will be playing a benefit concert at this location.

Supporting sponsors of these events include Niman Ranch, Coors, Odell’s, and Splick It.

The Social Singles – Don’t Call Me In

25 Mar

March’s single is a heartfelt song originally written in 2011. Exploring the sadness of having to leave your loved ones behind as life moves you forward, it celebrates the very universal themes of friendship, family, fear and sorrow. Hope you enjoy.

Days of Rae duo moves to Denver with free music under their belts

In the ongoing battle between the internet and the record industry, the internet has an ally in husband-and-wife duo and recent Denver transplants Days of Rae.

Shon and Cherie Rae Cobbs, offered their last two indie folk albums, 2010′sQuiet Profanityand 2011′sNaked Mache, with a pay-what-you-want (even $0) price tag through Bandcamp. They’re also both available for streaming.

“Everything being on Spotify and stuff, you can listen to everything for free, pretty much. So we’re just going that route, hoping that people will want to listen and think ‘I’ll pay for this,’” Cherie said. “We haven’t ever discussed label stuff. That’s a whole mystery to me. We’re just homegrown people. We wanna make music and put it out and hope people like it.”

Since they’ve only been in Denver for five months, they’re working on building a new audience and taking that free music approach a step further. Rather than pay to record a new album, they’ll use their own equipment to steadily release songs online under the titled “The Social Singles.” The first, “Not A Word,” was released Sunday, and they plan to debut a new track on the 15th of each month.

“Basically, you know, I just keep writing songs all the time, and how many outlets do you have for them?” Cherie said. “Obviously we’re not in it for the money. We just want it to be heard and hear what people think. I’ve been gathering up all these songs in the past year and they’re just sitting there. You can play them live, but you want to get them down.”

As if being new to a big city weren’t enough of a challenge, Shon and Cherie are adjusting to leaving behind their keyboard player and drummer. They moved from Minnesota to Denver because of Shon’s day job doing video engineering for Comcast, but other than coming out for two gigs, the rest of the band hasn’t followed.

“Being new to town, you have zero draw, of course,” Cherie said. “And out in Minnesota we played with two other guys. Obviously they’ve yet to move out here, so Shon and I are playing on our own.”

They haven’t given up hope, though. All four of them will play a gig in Denver together in February, and they’re planning to record together long distance. Keyboardist Ian Carleton and drummer Clint Trotter both have recording studios in their homes, so they’ll work from there and put the files in a drop box. From there, the Cobbs can add their own parts and mix the tracks.

Meanwhile, Days of Rae has tons of gigs coming up in the area. Cherie said she’s a bit nervous to perform live in their “stripped-down” state, and was hoping for short sets, but the duo’s shows will run from 1.5 to three hours.

Welcome to Colorado, Days of Rae.

12 Oct

Autumn leaves have lost their luster, careworn and brittle they start to fall while you’re a thousand miles from the place you call home. At the onset of the sentimental season a little homesick ode is written to pass some time.

5 Oct

In search of wistful, sleepy Sunday sound, we offer up this new song–Inside Your Head–and hope that you enjoy.
